Unfounded allegations in the media suggest that AMISOM peacekeepers denied treatment to injured civilians in the aftermath of the reprehensible attack on a peace rally in the Hamar-Weyne district of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
AMISOM can categorically state that this is not true.
There were no AMISOM troops in the vicinity at the time of the attack and immediately after being informed of the incident, AMISOM offered to assist Medina Hospital where most of the casualties were taken.
After the incident AMISOM was also in constant contact with the Transitional Federal Government’s medical authorities and was ready to help with both treatment and evacuation if necessary. One of the wounded persons is currently admitted to the AMISOM Field Hospitaland is receiving treatment.
AMISOM hospitals and outpatient clinics provide free medical treatment to over 12,000 Somalis every month, even including wounded enemy fighters. To refuse treatment to suffering civilians would defeat the very purpose of our mission to help Somalia get back on its feet after decades of anarchy.
