Press Release by Hiiraan Online rejecting AMISON Claims

Dear Major Ba-Hoku Barigye,

First let us extend our advance apology for not responding promptly to your press release with respect to Hiiraan Online (HOL) news item published on February 18, 2011 as reported by our reporter and chief editor in Mogadishu Mr. Mohamed Hagi Hussein. In your press release, which you have widely shared with the media notably with major Somali media, you state that HOL reporter is alleged to have said that “the AMISOM Force Spokesman, Major Ba-Hoku Barigye, today criticized the Transitional Federal Government, accusing it of being weak, lacking cohesion and letting its soldiers violate citizen’s rights with impunity” (sic). The news item you referred in your press release is written in Somali and is entitled “Afhayeenka AMISOM oo sheegay inay qorsheynayaan inay isku ballaariyaan degmooyinka Muqdisho”, which in English translation literally means the AMISOM spokesperson states that AMISOM troops plan to secure and capture new areas under the insurgent control.

It is regrettably, that you would hastily release such press statement without soliciting the service of qualified interpreters to translate for you the accuracy of the news item in question. However, we acknowledge your assertion that you have not spoken to Mr. Hussein, or indeed any other person from Hiiran Online, but the interview was conducted by Shabeele radio and we standby the substance and the accuracy of the interview as reported and published by HOL (Please listen the full interview )

The editorial Board of HOL is satisfied with the professionalism and journalistic ethical integrity of our Mogadishu reporter and chief editor Mr. Mohamed Hagi Hussein, and we are completely satisfied with the accuracy of the news, as such HOL will not recant the news item nor is an apology warranted.

For further details about this news please email to Head of HOL editorial Board,
